Mini-Biography
I was born and
raised in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois called Streamwood. I spent a
majority of my life there until I moved to Arizona in June of 1999. Even
though I did miss the changing of the seasons back in the Mid-West, I came to
find that I DIDN'T miss the cold wind or freezing rain! :-) I thoroughly
enjoyed living in Arizona and often took advantage of the beautiful weather and
scenery it has by mountain biking and hiking in my free time. However, I
must admit the heat tended to get a little overwhelming and I decided it was
time for yet another change. In June of 2007, I moved to Los Angeles,
California. Simply put, I love it here!
Prior to teaching, I worked at a hotel as a Catering Sales Manager.
However, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher so I began to go to school
full-time in the evening. It wasn't before long that I received my
Bachelor’s Degree from Ottawa
University in December of 2005. I vowed I would begin working
towards my Masters program within five years. I did and I finished my Masters
degree in Educational Media Design and Technology from Full Sail
University in December 2010. I work hard and love what I do and I'm
constantly striving to be the best teacher I can be. In 2008, I was lucky
enough to be chosen as one of fifteen Scholastic Book Club Advisors. I was
treated to a trip to downtown New York to offer my feedback regarding their
book clubs. They definitely treated us like royalty!!
A few of my favorite hobbies are technology (in and out of the classroom), reading,
writing, and web design. I also enjoy going to the movies and hanging
with my wonderful husband, Christian, who runs a successful landscaping company. When we have
time, we have fun exploring the different parts of Los Angeles or just spending
the weekend reading the paper and enjoying a cup of coffee from Starbucks
(well....actually Mocha Fraps). We were married on October 16, 2010 and I
officially began my life as Mrs. Lyon - previously Ms. Jensen. I couldn’t
imagine marrying a more caring or loving man. Quickly after we were married, we
were blessed to find out we were pregnant with our first child. Our
daughter, Kenzie, was born in July of 2011. Life seemed to stand still
when she was born and almost everything took a backseat to my beautiful
daughter. However, as the months have gone on, I have found how to juggle
and balance my life. We are now anxiously awaiting the birth of our 2nd
daughter in March of 2013. :-)
I have been
teaching for over seven years - mostly in 5th grade but I have one year in 4th
grade. In addition to teaching, I am also the Co-Vice Principal at my
school, the Director of the after care program, along with MANY other hats at
my job. I typically am the go to person regarding technology questions at
our school and if there is something new to try out, you better believe I'm
willing to give it a try in my classroom. I was fortunate enough to be
the one classroom in the 2012-2013 school year to pilot a 1:1 iPad program with
my 5th graders. So far we’ve been having a fabulous time exploring
all that is available to us. Between
my amazing class and my home life, I can honestly say at the end of the day
it's nice to crawl into bed but it is all very fulfilling too. I look
forward to seeing what the future holds for me in my career as well as my
personal life.
